World famous Koh Phi Phi is a group of at least six islands, located about 40 km east of the south tip of Phuket or 40 km south- west of Krabi and they also belong to Krabi Province. Of the two main islands, Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Lee, only Phi Phi Don is inhabited and has hotels and bungalow resorts. The other one, Phi Phi Lee is a huge rock with some beaches in between, including the famous Maya Bay, where the movie "The Beach" with Leonardo de Caprio was shot in the year 2000. The other islands are called Koh Yung (Mosquito Island) and Koh Mai Phai in the north of Phi Phi Don and Koh Bida Nok and Bida Nai, which are only large rocks south of Phi Phi Lee, but gives some excellent dive sites.
Luckily, the Phi Phi Islands are too small for cars and traffic and can be reached only by boat from Phuket, Krabi Town, Koh Lanta and Ao Nang Beach in Krabi.
The main attraction of Phi Phi Island is it's natural beauty which is unfortunately partially destroyed by the tourist infrastructure, such as the large pier, the heavy boat traffic but also with just too many hotels, shops and restaurants on the relatively small island. Another hit for the islands was the tsunami in December 2004 wihich completely destroyed the main tourist area between the two main beaches Tonsay Bay and Loh Dalum Bay. However, today by 2010 you can hardly see any traces of the tsunami. All destroyed hotels and other buildings have been rebuild, only the coconut trees need more time to grow to make it look like before the tsunami.
